Welcome To Mikumi National Park

Overview
Mikumi National Park is the fourth largest national park in Tanzania, located in the southeastern part of the country near the city of Morogoro, about 283 kilometers (176 miles) west of Dar es Salaam. Covering an area of approximately 3,230 square kilometers (1,250 square miles), it is part of the larger Selous ecosystem, which is one of the most diverse wildlife habitats in Africa.

Wildlife
Mikumi is renowned for its rich biodiversity and offers a fantastic wildlife experience. Tourists can expect to see:

  • Large Mammals: The park is home to elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, and wildebeests. The open savannah landscape makes wildlife viewing easy.
  • Predators: Lions are commonly seen in Mikumi, sometimes lounging on the dirt roads. Leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs are also present, though they can be more elusive.
  • Birdlife: With over 400 species of birds, including hornbills, eagles, and herons, Mikumi is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Migratory birds from Europe and Asia can be spotted between October and April.

Landscape
The park’s landscape is diverse, with a mix of savannah, miombo woodlands, and seasonal rivers. The Mkata Floodplain is a highlight, resembling the Serengeti’s ecosystem and offering an excellent spot for game drives. The plain is dotted with acacia trees and baobabs, creating picturesque scenery.

Activities

  • Game Drives: The most popular activity, with options for half-day or full-day drives. Early morning and late afternoon drives offer the best chances to see wildlife.
  • Guided Walks: Explore the park on foot with a guide, providing a closer look at the flora and smaller fauna.
  • Bird Watching: With a rich variety of bird species, birdwatching tours are popular, especially during the migratory season.
  • Picnic Spots: The park has designated areas where visitors can enjoy meals amidst nature.

Accommodation
Mikumi offers various accommodation options, ranging from luxury lodges to budget campsites within or near the park. Popular choices include Vuma Hills Tented Camp, Stanley’s Kopje, and budget-friendly public campsites.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season (June to October) is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources. The wet season (November to May) is ideal for birdwatching, but some roads may be challenging to navigate due to rains.

How to Get There

  • By Road: A 4-5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam on a well-maintained road.
  • By Air: Charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar to the park’s airstrip.

Tips for Tourists

  • Wear neutral-colored clothing to blend with the environment.
  • Carry sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens for better wildlife photography.
  • Always stay in the vehicle during game drives and follow the park ranger’s instructions.
